The sturdy body of a machine gun yields to the soft tissues and slippery surfaces of internal organs in the Soldiers Weeping Series. An uncanny juxtaposition of organic textures and colors that fill the otherwise solid weapon calls attention to the object’s function: to penetrate bodies, bringing the inside out. As a revolutionary human invention, the gun introduced a transition from cold weapons to firearms, and with it new and efficient approaches to war, hunt, and conquest. Fusing weapons to the human figure, Song highlights the tragedy of a technological innovation that enabled humanity’s advancement at the expense of its destruction.
