The gaping maw of a shark cuts through a triangular hoop. A man’s torso is contained within its open mouth, his glasses broken and tie fluttering as the shark hurtles forward. But rather than picture this relation between man and animal as one between predator and prey, Song calls attention to the cyclical nature linking living beings. The shark passes through a triangle composed of a man’s interlaced hands, the triangle a symbol of stability and order. Leaves flourish within the triangle’s gap. A balanced unity links man and animal to the natural world, connected literally and symbolically within a food chain marked by hunting, consumption, and decay.
