The floating bodies of Song’s Inflating Bodies series here give way to a grounded figure, captured within an acute triangle and resting on a grey surface, as though on a plinth. Set against a gold background, Immortality recalls the Western artistic use of backdrops decorated with gold leaf to suggest immaterial, spiritual realms. A hand grasps the edge of the man’s suit upward; though restrained within the shape’s sharp boundaries, the figure seems to be pulled upward, into a limitless and immortal realm distinct from his own.
