While most of the expanding bodies in the Inflating Series are pictured frontally, their forms appearing to press uncomfortably upon the surface of the canvas, Song here explores their expansion from another angle: from the side. Depicted in profile view, the uniform fabric of the figure’s suit expands across the canvas, his features lost at the edges of the picture’s frame. The abstraction of the figure’s body into a monochrome surface produces the effect of a color-field painting, putting into focus the relations and tensions between material and form.
