Oil on Canvas

2016

Metallic objects fall in a heap around the frame of Z. No.1. Some are discernable things—the skeletal mandible of a robot, bolts, tools, and gears—while others are merely glimmering flashes of steel. Though in sharp focus at the edges of the painting, their edges darken toward the center, whose void appears almost as a black hole. A juxtaposition between the accumulation of goods and the abyss that seems to pull them within it sets into play tensions between the endurance of crafted materials, art and technology included, within the engulfing expanse of time and space.
