In the digital print series, The Peristalsis of String, disorderly lines or forms are repeated and overlain systematically to form new geometries and compositions. Within the resulting monochromatic pictorial fields, the viewer is challenged to distinguish recognizable objects—a skull, a portrait—among chaotic surface patterns. To this end, Song explores the contradictory impulses that govern the universe as both an ordered and disordered, methodical and chaotic, system, as well as standard ways of existing within it. Harmonizing figural and abstract representations, he draws on string theory to visualize a world where vibrations form and connect all known form and matter.
