Against a dark surface, a luminous orb dissolves at its edges. The image establishes a purposeful uncertainty: does it picture a craterous planet suspended in a galaxy, or rather the surface of the cranium, its bones breaking up in speckled dots across the canvas? It does not have to be one or the other. From the moment of the Big Bang, the matter that creates and sustains human bodies became interconnected with celestial matter. For Song, cosmic energy shapes human consciousness, a visually continuous process here pictured in the ambiguous form of the orb. This persistent, almost cosmic, source of energy grows and expands to shape the discrete sense of self by which individuals learn to observe and make sense of their physical worlds.
